What is Narcan?

Narcan (naloxone) is a lifesaving medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid overdoses. It works by blocking the effects of opioids on the brain, restoring normal breathing and consciousness within minutes. Narcan can be administered as a nasal spray or injection, making it accessible for anyone, even those without medical training.

How Do I Use Narcan?

Call 911 and then follow these 6 steps to administer Narcan.

Lay the person on their back. Tilt their head back to ensure their airway is open.

Peel the package to remove the device. Then, hold it with your thumb at the bottom of the plunger and two fingers on the nozzle.

Place and hold the nasal tip into one nostril until your fingers touch the bottom of their nose.

Press the plunger firmly to release the dose into their nose.

Step 4

After 2-3 minutes, if there is no response, administer a second dose of Narcan using the other nostril.

Continue monitoring the person’s breathing and be ready to provide CPR if needed until they become responsive or help arrives.
